it's lonely at the top! at the bottom too! just in general, actually now that i think about it. || Do you know how many ways they think the universe will end? Cosmic heat death, as the universe expands, all the heat is drawn more evenly across the surace. The universe grows cold and listless. Nothing moves, there's nothing close enough, nothing has the energy. Some people believe in the big crunch. Where the universe expands to a peak, and then collapses in on itself, only to explode in the big bang, and start over and over again. ''How many times have we done this'' scientists postulate. How many times will we do it again? Or, maybe once the universe reaches that furthest point, once its swelled to its greatest, it won't be strong enough to pull itself together, and tears apart. Wel, one thing's for certain-- the end isn't so frightening when you look it in the eye. || It's fascinating, actually, how much of the universe there is. Some people like to throw numbers around. Comparisons. Peas in football fields. But in truth, people can't even begin to imagine from here to mars. From mars to the sun. From here to the Oort Cloud. From the Oort Cloud to the next solar system. And how close these solar systems appear to be. Smaller than the space between your thumb. But you could spend all your life walking, running, driving, flying, and you'd never even come close to how far the next star is. And all the stars in the galaxy are nothing to the space between the galaxies. In which there exists nothing, nothing at all! All of this nothing in the universe, and yet here we are! You and I are quite lucky to be face to face. || Did you know some people think the universe is actually quite small? If you were a two dimensional man on the surface a three dimensional object, you would walk forwards only to find yourself where you'd started. And yet, to you, you've only gone forwrds! Some scientists think that the universe is similar to a pac-man world, where it's just the same stars over and over and over again. Some scientists also think there's only really one ion, and it jumps between all points in time. How wonderful, it is then, that in this universe where everything is the same over and over again, that things can be so different.|| I had a dream once, where I was watching a movie. It was a movie about how they figured out immortality. There was this John Mulaney figure who’d been offered it, and somebody named Holt who wasn’t. Mulaney was of course going to say no, but Holt got mad that he wasn’t offered it, he was insecure about his learning disability and his social awkwardness. They were close friends but this drove them apart. Later John Mulaney Figure goes to a presentation about the alleged immortality. They’d first tested it on a group of pigeons. Perfectly normal pigeons from new york. After many years of living past the pigeons original lifespan, they’d changed in unimaginable ways. They flew in a strange flock that looked like a wind tunnel, had grown larger than a person, and developed beautiful plumage like that of a parrot or peacock. People were astounded. It’s possible to grow past what you were supposed to be. What would we become? Everyone is scared and hesitant. They say no. They like their worlds as they are, they like the people around them. The creator is humbled. He shuts down the program. (Side note: some people are holographic in this world. You can tell which ones. They’re not really people, just made to fill space where people should be. The creator of all this was one such person who’d become sentient. Crazy, right?) Later, Holt meets with the creator and gets to talking. It almost sounds like he’s talking about eugenics. They’re walking and talking. “If everyone were to live forever, surely we’d want only the best people?” He said, “Just the smartest and the funniest people, the most athletic, the people who are just good at everything. Shouldn’t those be the kinds of people who live forever?” At this point, there’s a little bucket half filled with dirt in Holt’s path. He tries to do a cool jump over it but it’s very clumsy and uncool. “The kind who’ve earned their love, who does everything right, right?” Said the creator. “Well, Holt, I know what you’re thinking.” He stopped walking. “People who jump over barrels like that don’t deserve the kind of love this world has to give.” Holt nods. “Holt,” The creator smiles, with his eyes and everything, and puts his hand on Holt’s shoulder. “I loved the way you hopped over that bucket.” He puts all the emphasis on the you. (It was here that I’d cried my eyes out.) Holt is shocked. Suddenly, the whole world is open and different. He goes on to write a book about all the things he’d learned. It’s a book on loving eachother, and was a wild bestseller. John Mulaney Guy at some point had been married off screen I think. His wife was a writer and listened to Holt’s audiobook on Spotify. She talked to him about it. About how he wrote “we think love can leave, but really only the person can leave. You’ll still carry that love with you.” “I just wish he’d written that line as ‘the love we knew had never left.’” She told him. All these years Mulaney felt guilty about the falling out they’d had. He knew he wasn’t any better than Holt, he knew he didn’t “deserve” immortality any more than he did. But more importantly he was mad at himself for not sticking with his friend, he was mad at himself for being so selfish. So he made it a point to meet up with Holt. He actually meets up by inviting him to a family reunion. “I’m sorry, about everything, about leaving you behind and just being so stupid” He said. “It’s okay, it’s okay. We go after the things we think we deserve. But I think we don’t need to deserve anything. I love you even when you make mistakes, and you dont ever need to deserve that.” John Mulaney thinks about the pigeons, about how one person can grow to be unrecognizable. He realizes that maybe that could be him too. .
